And what about the man behind the tracts – Jack Chick, himself? At 18, he was drafted to serve in World War II as a cryptographer. After the war, he applied his artistic skills as a technical illustrator for advertising, but he wanted to find ways to use his skills to preach his faith. Inspired by communist propaganda leaflets he would see during the war, he came upon the idea to produce short-form illustrated booklets that promoted his interpretation of the King James Only movement – a fundamentalist sect of Christianity that posits that any Bible interpretation written after 1611 promotes heresy and immorality. Chick bought into conspiracy theories that the Catholic Church assassinated Lincoln and created Islam, so he produced a plethora of Anti-Catholic tracts. His tracts would also attack Mormons, Halloween, homosexuality, Jews, Teachers…. Almost no one qualified for Heaven in his extremely narrow views on religion. He lived out his life looking over his shoulder for Catholic assassins, until his death in 2016.
