Outtakes – Ruth Bailey

Another contributor to Chick Tracts was Ruth Bailey. She was a doctor at Ball State Hospital, whose behavior was described as erratic. She began diagnosing patients as “demon possessed” and she took to performing exorcisms in the ICU. Her patient Edna Moses claimed to have been a reformed satanic High Priestess. The two began a relationship together, and campaigned publicly against imaginary conspiracies. A few years later, Moses was admitted to a hospital nearly dead from a Demerol overdose. An investigation revealed that Bailey had written over 100 fake prescriptions for Demerol in 6 months, acquiring 330 vials of the drug. She had misdiagnosed Moses with leukemia and was treating her with massive quantities of Demerol. She then announced that Jesus had given her the ability to share Moses leukemia and to take on some of her suffering, so she had been injecting herself with Demerol as well. Her medical license was revoked. She moved away and changed her name to Rebecca Brown, the name under which her stories became the basis for some of Jack Chick’s books on witchcraft.
